Audio: Palin’s radio address

A Cliff’s Notes version of Wednesday’s speech to keep your hungry bellies filled with Palinmania. I like the section near the end on energy (“as if we didn’t already know that”); the rest will feel a bit worn since you’re already familiar with it, but of course most voters are not.

Unrelated exit question: Say, didn’t Obama’s campaign manager promise he’d repay the kindness after McCain ran that ad congratulating Obama on winning the nomination? What happened to that? Does going on O’Reilly the night of Maverick’s speech to try to steal some of his buzz now qualify as “congratulations”?

Good morning, this is Sarah Palin — the governor of Alaska and candidate for vice president. When Senator John McCain asked me to join the ticket last week, he placed a lot of confidence in me, and I’m going to do my level best to be worthy of it. Senator McCain also asked me to fill in for him today in his weekly radio address — he’s putting me right to work.

In my speech to the convention last Wednesday, I wanted to share some basic convictions, and also to tell you a little about the path that shaped those convictions. I never really set out to be involved in public affairs, much less to run for vice president. My mom and dad both worked at the local elementary school, and my husband Todd and I, we both grew up working with our hands. I was pretty much your average hockey mom, raising kids, and joined the PTA. When I ran for city council of my hometown, and then for mayor, I didn’t need focus groups and voter profiles because I knew those voters, and I knew their families, too. I’m not a member of the permanent political establishment, and I have no plans to join.

That was the spirit that brought me to the governor’s office, when I took on the old politics as usual in Juneau, when I stood up to the special interests, the lobbyists, big oil companies, and the good-ol’ boys network. Sudden and relentless reform never sits well with entrenched interests and power brokers. That’s why true reform is so hard to achieve. But with the support of the citizens of Alaska, we shook things up, and in short order we put the government of our state back on the side of the people.

I came to office promising major ethics reform, to end the culture of self-dealing. And today, that ethics reform is the law. I came to office promising to control spending — by request if possible and by veto if necessary. And today, our state budget is under control. We have a surplus. And I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending: nearly half a billion dollars in vetoes.

Senator McCain also promises to use the power of veto in defense of the public interest — and as a chief executive, I can assure you it works. In a McCain-Palin administration, we’ll pursue a pro-growth agenda focused on creating jobs and reducing the tax burden. And with a maverick in the White House, Republicans are going to reclaim our good name as the party of spending discipline.

Our opponent in this election supports plans to raise taxes on income, payroll, investment income, business income, and altogether would increase the tax burden on the American people by hundreds of billions of dollars. But ask yourself: If you’re trying to run a small business, or to keep your job at a plant, or keep a small farm in the family, how are you going to be better off if he adds a massive tax burden to the American economy?

In Alaska, we’ve also made some serious reforms in energy policy. When oil and gas prices went up dramatically, and filled up the state treasury, I sent a large share of that revenue right back where it belonged — directly to the people of Alaska. And despite fierce opposition from oil company lobbyists, we broke their monopoly on power and resources. As governor, I insisted on competition and basic fairness to end their control of our state and return it to the people. I fought to bring about the largest private-sector infrastructure project in North American history. And when that deal was struck, we began a nearly $40 billion natural gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence.

Energy security is one of the great issues in this presidential campaign, and I look forward to debating it. Our opponents keep saying that drilling will not solve all of America’s energy problems — as if we didn’t already know that. But the fact that drilling won’t solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all. Starting in January, in a McCain-Palin administration, we’re going to lay more pipelines and build more nuclear plants, create jobs with clean coal, and move forward on solar, wind, geothermal, and other alternative sources. We need American energy resources, brought to you by American ingenuity, and produced by American workers.

John McCain is a man who has always served his country and not just his party, and that’s exactly the spirit we need in Washington today. Politics isn’t just a game of clashing parties and competing interests. The right reason to enter politics is to challenge the status quo, to serve the common good, and to leave this nation better than we found it. No one expects us to agree on everything. But we are expected to govern with integrity, good will, clear convictions, and a servant’s heart. And I pledge to all Americans that I will carry myself in this spirit as Vice President of the United States. Thank you for listening.

Go McCain, Go Sarah

Go America. We need these two in the White House.

We don’t NEED Obama nor Joe Biden. Simple as that.

If you’re a Hillary voter, give her the chance to get it right in four years. Barack is NOT the ONE, he’s the ZERO

I think the obama camp did something on tuesday didnt they? Thought I read that. Then he tried to steal McCain’s thunder by looking like a moron on O’reilly. Maybe that was Obama’s gift to McCain?

Someone needs to ask Obama what it’s like not being the new kid in town anymore.

There’s a new SuperStar in town… and she’s got one hell of a bite.

There’s talk on the street; it sounds so familiar
Great expectations, everybody’s watching you
People you meet, they all seem to know you
Even your old friends treat you like you’re something new

Barry come lately, the new kid in town
Everybody loved you, and you let them down

Have you not been paying attention?

I can’t count the number of people I’ve seen or read who have said that they will now enthusiastically vote for this ticket. From poster to pundit to person on the street, she’s made a massive impact in this regard.

Spirit of 1776 on September 6, 2008 at 11:52 AM

I confess I’ve never followed a politician as closely as I am Sarah Palin. So I have a question - how often do speeches get rewritten? I’m asking because Ed mentioned some of the speech would “feel a bit worn” and it’s true, but like I said, I usually don’t pay this much attention. When should we expect some new material from Palin?

Can we talk about “real” things–like the way the GOP has run the country into the ground over the past 8 years, with a stupid war of choice, deregulated markets that have triggered a housing and banking crisis, and now climbing unemployment. If you think you can cover this mess with some flag waiving–wait til the election. The public ain’t gonna fall for this cynicism anymore.

Estimates of 12,000 American Flags tossed in the trash after the Dem Convention.

dugan on September 6, 2008 at 12:06 PM

IrishGirl17 on September 6, 2008 at 12:00 PM

Apparently the DenverPost.com site is being overwhelmed, as it uploads very slowly. Here is the text that should be of interest to people:

This morning, Republicans tell me that a worker at Invesco Field in Denver saved thousands of unused flags from the Democratic National Convention that were headed for the garbage. Guerrilla campaigning. They will use these flags at their own event today in Colorado Springs with John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Before McCain speaks today, veterans will haul these garbage bags filled with flags out onto the stage — with dramatic effect, no doubt — and tell the story.

“What you see in the picture I sent you is less than half of total flags,” a Republican official emailed. “We estimate the total number to be around 12,000 small flags and one full size 3×5 flag.”

I’m not sure what the DNC was supposed to do with unused hand-flags, frankly. But the Republicans are obviously questioning someone’s patriotism here.

And HiberniaLass is correct: if true, this is devastating PR - as long as workers who cleaned up after the RNC bash didn’t do the same thing.

Probably when she starts campaigning separate from Mac. Right now she’s still introducing him.

When she is out on her own, she’ll be presenting a more focused message, dependent on location. But it will still have large amounts of the same stuff because they will want to reiterate their theme. I expect her to elaborate on energy and jobs here in the near future. I would like to predict that CNBC or Cavuto will have the first big interview.

Anecdotal but one corner up from my home are the local newspaper racks which usually are half full when the next morning papers arrive (Dallas Morning News/FW Star Tel). These last few days I’ve noticed they are empty by noon. Maybe someone is sending out like triple value coupons or something and that accounts for the sudden community interest.

This has always been the problem with the McCain campaign. Some how the same stories get repeated over and over. They still campaign as though every story didn’t make it on to TV.

It makes sense if you think you are talking to a different audience every day. But especially when they had so many viewers Wed. and Thurs. They need to freshen things up a bit. I haven’t noticed it so much in other campaigns. The same jokes, the same voice tones at the same places…

I hope someone with pull is noticing and fixing the problem. They can say basically the same thing but have different words or something.

petunia on September 6, 2008 at 12:25 PM

Sorry, petunia, but you’re not going to get hired as a campaign consultant. Repeating the same message with the same lines is intentional, not to mention unavoidable. Very few people, relative to the size of the electorate follow the campaigns closely. What you’re asking would be like asking the actors at a Broadway show to come up with new lines every night, or a band to re-arrange its songs and re-write the lyrics for every performance. Obviously, freshening things up when possible is all to the good, but the general objective is to penetrate as many minds as possible with some memorable messages, just a handful, along with an overall impression.

It was even better when she delivered it in her speech at the RNC.

Yeah: If it helps Allah with his pessimism, it’s not a good sign when someone reuses so many lines in so little time. Hopefully, this will be corrected, but many people might start to think there’s no there there — that she can only parrot a few scripted lines — is she keeps reusing the exact same phrases day after day. When I first heard the “lipstick” line, I smiled. When I heard her recycle it, I cringed. I realize that politics involves reusing lines, ideas, and phrases, but you don’t want to wind up like John Edwards and say, “This is the first time I’ve told anyone” something he’s said before. Tread carefully, Governor Palin!

Looks like petunia, me and calbear are in the minority being bothered by this. I used to work in advertising, so I’m familiar with being sick to death of a pitch long before it reached the saturation level with the public that we needed. And I realize 24/7 cable news and Internet makes it difficult to stay fresh. Still, I wish she’d at least change up the inflection, or something.

That said, 0bama’s was still using the “they’re going to say I’ve got a funny name” speech as recently as yesterday, so our side’s not the only side doing it.
